Remembering Our Troops This Memorial Day
Memorial Day began as grassroots acts of remembrance. In the aftermath of the Civil War, formerly enslaved people in South Carolina tended and honored fallen soldiers, setting early traditions of tribute. The following year, Waterloo, NY held the first community grave-decorating event on May 5.
In 1868 the federal observance of “Decoration Day” was established as May 30; after World War I it expanded to honor Americans who died in all wars. In 1971 the Uniform Monday Holiday Act made Memorial Day a federal holiday, observed on the last Monday in May. In 2000, a law encouraged a national moment of silence at 3:00 PM on Memorial Day to honor the fallen.
Today, with service members deployed worldwide, remembering those who gave their lives remains essential. DDM Garage Doors, Inc. thanks all veterans and honors the memory of those who sacrificed for our country.
